Christmas Musical

The first graders at Hilltop Elementary performed a Christmas Musical this week for the parents. Mrs. Dooley had them well prepared and they put on a great performance! The dance moves and singing were wonderful. It doesn't get much cuter than this! Also, our own Lily had a solo and made our class very proud!

Thanksgiving Celebration

We were so excited to have our parents invited to eat Thanksgiving dinner this year with the kids. After lunch, we had the parents come back to our room for a Readers' Theatre presentation called the ABC's of the first Thanksgiving. The kids did a great job and looked adorable in their Native American vests and headdresses

. 

Edible Landforms

I blew the kids' minds when I told them that to end our unit on landforms we would be not only building landforms with food, but we would also get to eat them! Check out a few of the photos of the landforms the boys and girls made out of graham crackers, colored icing, Hershey kisses, Rolos, and brown sugar. We had a blast making these and Kaden even claimed that it was the best day of school ever! 

 

Read Write the Room

Our first graders love anything that gets them up and moving, so one of our favorite activities is the Read Write the Room lesson. When studying the difference between common and proper nouns, the students had to go on a search around the room for nouns and write them down on a recording sheet deciphering between whether they were common or proper. Not only did the kids do a great job telling the difference, but they had a lot of fun doing it! They looked so cute and important with their little clipboards!

Field Trip to the Perry Fair

We spent our Friday before Fall Break exploring all that the local Perry Fair had to offer. The students had a wonderful time seeing all of the animals and educational exhibits at the fair. They got to see a cow being milked, chickens being hatched, pig races, and of course got to see a few animals at the petting zoo. It was hot, tiring day, but we had a blast! 

Fun with Math Centers

If you come in our first grade class on any given day, you are likely to see the children working together in groups. I believe group work allows students to learn from each other, learn communication skills, and learn about the importance of teamwork. Here are a few photos from the beginning of the year of the kids exploring math manipulatives and getting to know one another a little better in small groups. 

Johnny Appleseed Day

          Studying Folk Heroes is a major standard for first grade. On Johnny Appleseed's Birthday, we took the celebration to a new level by dressing like the folk hero and parading through the halls. The students had so much fun with their outfits which included plaid shirts, wearing pots on their heads, and carrying satchels. Check our our class decked out in their Johnny Appleseed gear!
